Best Indie Shops in St. Petersburg

Indie Shops St. Petersburg woman holding bags

St. Petersburg has a different vibe than Tampa. The local cities need to shine individually sometimes in order to come together and shine even brighter.  St. Pete has a trendy youthful vibe that is very city, meets beach, meets old money.  People have called St. Pete the Venice of Florida, and to be quite honest, it is a pretty good comparison.  We have tons of boats.  We ride bikes all over the city.  We have expensive housing.  We love to party, and we have trendy independent shops.  (See how I segwayed right into the shop article?  I am brilliant.)

Best Indie Shops in St. Petersburg:

Plain Jane

Plain Jane is the brainchild of the owner, who decided that being called Plain Jane as a child was not such a bad thing. Her shoppe is anything but plain. Plain Jane carries candles, shoes, jewelry, notecards, toys, and beach tunics. It is a girls dream to meander through the store and touch the adorable mice stuffed-animals laid to nap in large matchbox beds, and smell the perfumes and body butters.  The eclectic jewelry that you can add charms to or not. The bags for beach and around town are so cute – I almost died from looking at them. Plain Jane is a stop that must be made on your downtown St. Petersburg shopping trip.

Nardo’s Naturals

I have been following Nardo’s Naturals since I sat next to a couple of the Mastronardo brothers in a business class a few years ago.  These business brothers are home grown, and the area is darn proud of them.  In case you missed them on Shark Tank (yes, they were on tv), they designed an all natural, pure skincare regime.   Their skincare line has no chemicals, fragrances, and is gluten-free – nothing but natural goodness.  I was just in their shop in St. Pete today and their store is cute with quite an array of product for all ages.   You should definitely make Nardo’s Naturals a stop on your next shopping trip.

Mis en Chic

Mis en Chic is a dream store. They carry French furniture, candles, decor, notecards, and even boutique clothing. The overall theme is shabby French provincial, meets Bridget Bardot – it is almost Chateau Gudanes-esque.  This is not a store you bring a child into to touch things and run amuck.  Mis en Chic is the store you visit with your gal pals after/before a nice luncheon and a glass of chardonnay.  The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and eager to help out and show around. I cannot wait to go for another visit. They have the cutest shopping bags around.

Everything Dolce

Everything Dolce has everything sweet one could imagine.  They have gluten-free, coffee, sugar, cake – everything.  They even have live music on their trendy rustic patio. In the evenings they light up their patio with white Christmas lights. I personally, love the cafe effect the hanging lights bring.  Stop in for some of the most unusual desserts and interesting conversations.

Southeastern Guide Dog Outreach Center & Dog Boutique

The Southeastern Guide Dog Outreach Center has opened a boutique style dog shop on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg. This store filled with anything a lucky pooch could want. It supports the guide dog training program, which gives Guide Dogs to needy people. Plus, the merchandise is great all around. I found doggy water bottles, doggy toys, doggy stationary (like dogs can write), and books on dogs.  I was tempted to spend all I had on gifts for my furry loved one.

Green Bench Flowers

The Green Bench Flower shop has been in business forever and is a St. Pete staple.  One nice thing is that all these years in business has not gone to their head. Their flowers are always fresh; their prices are the best in town.  The store is not a typical flower store – with a cooler on one side and a cash register on the other.   Visiting the Green Bench Flower store is like walking through the looking glass into a jungle made of roses and daisies, with smells of  fresh sprigs of eucalyptus. Stop in for a visit.

Daddy Kool Records

What is cooler than cool music?  Cool music on vinyl. Daddy Kool Records carries new and used records. Come visit this shop and walk down memory lane, or create some new memories with a few purchases of vinyl records of your favorite artists.  I have purchased Madonna from Daddy Kool, Prince, and even the Carpenters. Incase you were wondering, the Carpenters were before my time. My much older sisters used to play them while we did our Saturday chores.

Haslam’s Book Store

Haslam’s has been a St. Pete haunt (literally) for years!  My parents visited Haslam’s to buy books.  This book store has a cult following and specializes in rare books, books needed for school (homeschooling, private or public), and they have an amazing military book section. Noticed how I mentioned haunt?  They even have a ghost. They even know who he was. The ghost is a retired judge that rearranges books and does not like people moving his chair around from where he used to sit and read before his exit into the afterlife. Go visit Haslam’s and do NOT move the judges’ chair.

Furnish Me Vintage

Want to decorate your house like the Brady Bunch’s house? Come to Furnish me Vintage. Want to find an old victorian vanity? Come to Furnish Me Vintage. Want to find an entire set of old Tupperware? Eh, they do not have that. However, they do periodically have record players, hanging chairs, and all sorts of other furnishings from the last century – all in fabulous condition.

Paper Street Market

Paper Street Market is where you go when you want one major statement piece like, say, a huge glowing letter from an old sign. Maybe a metal industrial card catalog. Perhaps hundreds of rolls of yellowed architect drawings. Paper Street Market is the store where you will find vintage furniture recovered in vinyl or some objet d’art that will start your redecorating process or top it off. Stop by Paper Street Market to be amazed.
