10 Best St. Petersburg Recreation Activities
Are you looking for the 10 best St. Petersburg recreation activities? You have come to the right place. After all, no one knows the ‘Burg like me. Being a native St. Pete Saint, I know all the obscure, interesting, off the beaten path things we Saints participate in. The best of the best St. Petersburg recreation activities are below. If I have missed anything, feel free to comment at the end of the article.
When people move to St. Pete they are usually eager to learn to surf. We, natives, laugh and watch. We know Florida is not Hawaii or Cali, and know the waves from Hawaii and Cali only exist here during a hurricane. It is very dangerous to be in the water during a hurricane, and we natives avoid swimming during that time. However, there is an alternative to trying to surf the hurricane – that is windsurfing. Windsurfing is literally riding the wind. It is windy here all year long. If one could harness the wind, well, imagine the fun that would create. I see tons of wind surfers every time I cross the Sunshine Skyway bridge. I get a little jealous that I am heading into the city, and not into the water. Especially, when I am seeing them do arial tricks – coming out of the water and dipping into the water like aqua/arial acrobats. The place the locals go to learn windsurfing is North Beach Windsurfing. North Beach Windsurfing also teaches paddle boarding.

Love the smell of gun oil? Love the distant sound of a shotgun? Then you will adore the Skyway Trap & Skeet Club. This uber responsible teaching range offers classes for newbies, training for teen olympic hopefuls, as well as hobby marksmen that love shotguns. They give “Try it out Lessons”, which I highly recommend. They do fundraising shooting events, as well as youth programs, and even gun fittings. The Skyway Trap & Skeet Club is a great date night, family night, or group get together. Do not have a shotgun, but would like to try it anyway? You are in luck, they rent the guns, and will sell you the shells. An evening of one round of gun rentals and shotgun shells is about $30. Watch out, it is addicting.

One of St. Petersburg’s biggest recreation traditions, outside of swimming in the Gulf, is shuffle boarding. Shuffleboarding has been a part of the city since its conception over 100 years ago. Originally, shuffle boarding was for the young. As the city aged the sport aged, too. Now it is right back where it should be with the hip and happening crowd. What is more fun than getting together with your posse at the shuffle boards? There is nothing like having some friendly competition as you sip an ice cold glass of chardonnay ( or Rosa Regale if it is a festive occasion). What makes the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club the best? Live music every Friday night, and the ability to bring your own picnic basket or coolers. Family night or Friendly night, up to you. Shuffleboard may not have been in the front of your mind, but trust me – it is definitely on of the best St. Petersburg recreation activities. Have to love the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club.

The “Bike Club”, as it is known to the cycling addicted, is the best cycling club in the county. People actually drive in from all over just to ride the St. Petersburg Cycling Club’s routes. I am not exaggerating one bit. I ride with the bike club off and on depending on the weather – I love it. They have rides for beginners, moderate, and advanced riders. The group is huge! No one believes the size of the club until they actually show up to a ride. A word of warning, it can be a bit intimidating if you are new to road biking. However, if you research the rides online before you show up, you will fall right into the right group. The members are helpful and everyone is united by the love of the bike. If you would like to get into cycling, visit the clubs website and take a look at which riding groups are available. Check out their calendar for special event rides. They even have links on their website to bike stores that are helpful and knowledgeable in finding you the best bike for your needs. Men or women are equally welcome.
The members of this club impress the snot out of me. Very few people can intimidate me the way a triathlete can intimidate me. Not that one has ever been unkind or rude, heck, they are not even arrogant. What intimidates me about the members of this club is the self-discipline it takes to be part of the Mad Dogs. To me, a Mad Dog makes me stand in awe, similar to the way a little child looks at a police officer or military personnel. All I can think of when I see triathletes is, “Wow”. Being a cyclist I understand the hard work it takes to ride long distances, but couple that with swimming (in the bay no less) and running in the heat – all I can do is watch with open-mouthed amazement. You will always know a Mad Dog when you see one. Usually, there are at least two together and as many as twenty training along the beach. You will be lying like a beached whale on your beach towel at Fort DeSoto thinking it is too hot to move, and out of the water will come these well-trained hard bodied men and women just finishing up their 5 mile swim up the beach. Impressive group. This is one way St. Pete Saints spend their recreation hours. There is no address, they all meet out in the open and enjoy nature as they work out. It actually sounds like heaven. Follow the link to their website for more info or to join.
The Derby Lane in St. Petersburg is known as the oldest continuously operating greyhound race track in the world! Derby Lane is the huge track out on Gandy Boulevard, where one can gamble on the dogs, horses or play poker. They even have a great brunch on Saturday, or dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings. The track is open all week, and many a jackpot has been won at the Derby. Also, during horse racing season they live stream the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. They also have an amazing poker environment after all, Derby Lane has been rocking St. Pete since the 1920’s. That is when Babe Ruth was in town (his old house still stands in the Allendale neighborhood in St. Pete). The Derby is one recreation heritage that goes back many a year. The city is also the retirement capital for the derby dogs. Many a dog is retired and being walked (and worked out) in old St. Pete. They are amazing creatures.
